The features of K2 Apache Crossfire are similar to the features of European allmountain models. The tested model (08/09) has a 70 mm waist which corresponds to allmountain skis. It is, however, still the narrowest of all K2 Apache models and one could say it gives it a certain "European" tinge. The 09/10 model with its waist of 74 mm is a completely different story.
The graphics of this model corresponds with the rest of the models from the range, recognizable by a huge K2 logo on tip and tail of the ski. The models in the range differ only by combination of colors on respective models. You will recognize Crossfire by black color on the front part and orange on the tail of the ski. In the middle part of the ski these colors merge one into another which results in a very interesting visual effect on the snow, especially during half-cloudy weather. The graphics of 09/10 Crossfire model has been slightly redesigned; the combination of colors remains, but with more tinge of orange. One could say it is a typical American design which you simply like or dislike. By picking out this combination of colors, the designers maybe wanted to stress the skis' temperamental character.
Speaking of the technologies, Crossfire is implemented with the following: MOD technology provides for eliminating the vibrations, together with MOD Monic which additionally eliminates vibrations owing to zinc plates embedded into the ski; Metal laminate technology uses layers of titanium combined with wooden core to ensure desired torsion rigidity. (Read more on K2 technologies here and here.) The tested model is equipped with K2/MX 12.0 bindings which are produced in cooperation with Marker. MX system is reserved for the best Apache models.
According to the catalogue, the ski is mostly (70%) intended for groomers and only partly (30%) for off piste skiing, which corresponds with reality. These skis are primarily intended for cruising groomed slopes, but also allow some time spent off piste where they won't let you down, despite the fact their waist is 'only' 70 mm wide and they are not as light weight as off piste models. As much as their weight hinders skiing off piste, it provides you with stability on groomed runs. Crossfire is very stable during straight skiing down the slope; you feel that you have 'something reliable under your feet', and if you speed up this model will prove very powerful. The ski performed well in both soft/worn out snow and on hard packed surfaces. They are surprisingly stable and maneuverable in long turns and have good edge grip. As you put these skis onto edges in a long turn they will enter the turn quite effortlessly, and the construction will enable them to finish it powerfully and with surprisingly lot of energy. However be careful that you keep dynamically neutral balance position on the skis during a turn, so as to avoid unpleasant surprises. You will be pleasantly surprised when you speed up because Crossfire proves to be very responsive in such situations.
However, short turns are not too favorable for this model; during short turns Crossfire won't prove too lively and they will feel quite heavy, especially as you enter the turn. In such moments they are not easily put from edge to edge, as it is the case with some more responsive slalom models. If you're into short turns and have Crossfire under your feet, you should opt for hard packed and nicely groomed slope rather than soft and worn out snow.
These skis are intended for all those who now and then want to try off piste and are not too much into short turns, but want to enjoy skiing groomers in all snow conditions. If you are intermediate to advanced skier with the habit of physically preparing for the ski season you might like Crossfire. Also, it will appeal to all skiers craving for skis that prefer powder and reflect American spirit. It is true that among all Apache models Crossfire has the least of these characteristics, but its origin remains clear.
