Quite a few changes have been made concerning Atomic race range. It is a rare example of technological and design refreshment for the upcoming season. The new race range lost its numerical labels, and the models are now labeled only with letters: SL, GS, ST, LT. Also, the range comprises last year's novelty - D2.
This season Atomic opted for somewhat minimalistic graphics. Race SL models are colored white, with letters on them (Race SL and Race D2 SL) printed in red, which is a characteristic of the slalom range. Simple and unobtrusive design keeps up with the time; however "Atomic" label is very visible, despite unobtrusiveness. Speaking of graphics of these two models, Race SL and Race D2 SL slightly differ in color (different hues of red) and texture of the upper layer of the ski.
The most important thing is Doubledeck technology, which was this year also implemented into race models. Our impression is that here it found its best appliance. Doubledeck is an extremely important thing when it comes to flexibility. Vario Flex technology not only ensures somewhat lighter mass of Atomic race models, but it also provides for resisting forces along the horizontal axis, which makes the ski remain stable and stiff at higher speeds. At lower speeds, when there is not much energy accumulated in the elastomers along the upper layer of the ski, it allows for more relaxed and calmer (that is, easier) skiing.
The ski's features in the catalogue are very close to our impressions stated above. The ski is very calm and maneuverable at low speeds on mild slopes. Although you will feel from the start that this is a race ski, it acts exactly the way you expect it to. However, you will see it at its best once you reach the steep hard packed slopes. Atomic's models well known for their stiffness and great edge hold remain, but are now joined by novelty slalom model which is more maneuverable and which doesn't require as much strength for shifting the ski from edge to edge. There are bits and pieces of its old character still left, but the new slalom model surprises with its speed of shifting from edge to edge and great maneuverability.
This ski is extremely precise. You will initiate the turns with it very easily, and due to D2 technology, the coming out of the turn is extremely fast; the accumulated energy simply explodes, turning this seemingly calm ski into a wild beast that prepares for the next turn with the speed of cheetah. This extremely important feature in ski racing, however, asks for a bit of accommodation.
Atomic D2 Race SL will act more than tolerable in conditions that are not tailored up to its features. It is rather wide considering its purpose, and giving the fact it is not too heavy you can take it into soft snow without greater difficulties.
After a long period of extremely stiff and non-compromising Atomic race models, this is a pleasant surprise; a buoyant ski which is not too heavy and stiff, and at the same time capable of speeding. It is recommended for top recreational skiers; however, be prepared for a period of accommodation.
