Atomic Skis 09/10
Wide range of new models, signed by the new doubledeck system, is Atomic's forte this season.

When in the middle of the last season Atomic launched a new, revolutionary doubledeck technology, it was to be expected that this technology will mark the season 2009/10. Just like Rossignol did with Mutix technology, Atomic incorporated d2 into several different series of models, making "doubledeckers" available to a wide range of skiers.

Similar to last year's classification, Atomic divided its product line into race series, recreational Drive series, allmountain Nomad category, freeride/freestyle series and women's, which contains a bit of everything mentioned. As well as other manufacturers, Atomic also dropped cross series out of its product line which means no more well-known SX models in the shops.

Major changes affected race series. After many years no more number tags we all got used to, so the SL and GS models come without 10, 11 or 12 suffix. Doubledeck technology fully incorporated into the race series, making D2 Race GS no. 1 ski in the range, followed by the "normal" Race TI GS and the "weakest" Race LT (fig. below). Very significant change concerns the width of the waist – 70 mm+ in all GS models.

Similar changes affected slalom models: range is lead by D2 Race SL (fig. below), followed by Race TI SL and the "weakest" Race ST. SL models boast with waists larger than 70 mm. Concerning design, race series remained true to the red-white-black concept, but the graphics are somewhat simplified if compared to older models.

Unlike the race series that experienced the reduction of number of models (caused by the withdrawal of SX models), recreational Drive series simply flourishes. Last year's four-models series has grown to even 17(!) models. Main reason for this "boom" is the incorporation of the doubledeck models into this recreational group. Vario cut models (lower ski is separated at the tip and the tail; when greater pressure is applied on the top ski, gap becomes wider causing more extreme sidecut and, consequently, shorter turns) come in four variants and are intended for skilled skiers: D2 VC 72 Black, D2 VC 82 Black (the difference in width waist of 72mm and 82 mm), D2 VC Select and D2 VC 82 Select.

Vario flex models, where longitudinal flex can be adjusted according to the pressure on the upper ski, come in seven variants lead by VF D2 70. Then, D2 Select 72 VF, 82 VF D2 Select, D2 VF 72 Sport and D2 VF 82 Sport are available, and on the end of the range are D2 VF 75 Select and D2 VF 75 Sport.

Regular Drive models remained similar to last year, but the names are slightly changed. U-Turn technology is still present. Advanced skiers will seek for the Carbon Sport and Carbon Select models, intermediates will be satisfied with Titan Sports, Scandium Select and Scandium Sport while beginners will enjoy Fiber Sport model. This huge number of Drive model is somewhat more humble in reality, knowing that the only difference between the Select and the Sport models is only in the graphics.

Nomad models, intended for skiing in all conditions, regardless of whether it is a groomed slope or a freeride area, continue to use TFC sectors which are less "doted" than previous seasons. Whole series has completely changed graphics looking more like freeride models now. Range is lead by Savage TI with a 93 mm wide waist, made for experts who will know how to take advantage of the ski's potentials. Savage is followed by Crimson TI (86mm waist) – a model for advanced skiers, then Blackeye TI. Intermediates will benefit from Blackeye and Smoke TI while beginners will enjoy Smoke.

Freeride models are represented with Atlas, COAX and Snoop; freestyle back country with Bent Chetler and Blog, and park&pipe models with Patent, Punx, Twins and Deviant.

Women series is characterized by "a bit of everything" concept. Leader is, of course, the new doubledeck model for women, D2 VF 75 (fig. below). Just like last year there is freeride model Heaven's Gate and the Nomad Seventh Heaven model which comes in two widths - 79 and 76. Cloud models are present just like the last season - led by the strongest Cloud 9, then 8, 7, and 6 for beginners. Girls also have their own freeski/freestyle models: Heaven'n Hell, Elysian, She Devil, Bad Kitty.

Atomic's line-up is rounded with touring models: Freedream, Descender, Guide Huberbuam, Freetrack, Outbreaker and Ultimate.
