Atomic Technology 09/10
Doubledeck system stands for the greatest novelty of the season 2009/10.

-.--.-Doubledeck system (d2), announced and tested during the last half of the past season, found its usage among the many models designed for the on-piste skiing. The very name describes a system in which the ski is divided on the two "decks", or, as Atomic picturesquely states, one ski is set on another. The system comes in two variants: D2 Vario Cut and D2 Vario Flex. Doubledeck can be found in many of the models in the race and recreational Drive series.

Vario cut is a somewhat more extreme variant in which the ski is literally cut "by half" longitudinally. The lower ski is separated at the tip and the tail and the gap is filled with rubber and plastic. With higher driving speeds and greater pressure applied on the top ski, gap becomes wider causing more extreme sidecut and, consequently, shorter turns.

-.--.-Vario Flex, unlike previous versions, does not have a possibility to change sidecut, but only longitudinal flex. With higher speed and greater pressure applied by the skier, the elastomer connection between the upper and the lower deck stiffens making ski more stabile and improving driving characteristics. When skiing a bit slower, ski maintains ease of maneuverability.

Race models without the d2 technology are completely redesigned. Sidecuts are different with GS and SL models having waists of more than 70 mm. New core is composed entirely of wood and two layers of titanium while well-known Powerbridge system is still present.

-.--.-U-Turn, built in the Drive models that do not benefit from the d2 technology, is still present. Main purpose is to dampen the vibrations. An elastic insert is placed at the critical spot in front of the binding, absorbing vibrations and sending them back onto the edges via U-shaped transmitter. That way, recreational skiers will benefit from a better edge grip and a ski that is easier to ride. The inserts are made of various materials, which can be easily read from the name of the model: Drive 11 Carbon, Drive 9 Titan, Drive 7 Scandium and Drive 5 Fibre.

-.--.-Torsion Flex Control triangle sectors on Nomad models don't boast with sharply dotted structure anymore, but the task remains the same. Depending on the model, Nomad skis contain up to 10 such sectors. Last year introduced titanic reinforcements are still present and provide better performance on hard and icy slopes.

-.--.-Female models still benefit from Woman Flex Zone, introduced last year and available only in the Cloud series. They are distributed between the tip and the tail of skis in the 4:2 ratio (four zones located in front of the binding and two behind) and 3:1 (three in the front, one behind).

Like some other manufacturers, Atomic also changed the camber of the freeride and freestyle skis. Power rocker indicates tip of the ski lifted off the ground, easing the maneuverability of the ski in the deep snow. Here, design of the tail remains conservative, meaning easier and safer turns. On contrary, Pop rocker technology lifts both tip and tail off the ground, making ski equally usable no matter what the direction of the ride is.
