Atomic Doubledeck, the ski we already mentioned, according to its manufacturers, adapts automatically to both your individual skiing style and the variety of slope conditions. This is a phrase that many other brands use as well, but here we might be facing a completely different product, coming from Austrian Altenmarkt. Atomic is certain that this ski will mark a new era in alpine skiing.
A new technology is based on two decks and it can be simply described as one ski on the top of the other. The two skis which are produced separately are joined together but can move freely. The lower deck (adapter deck) adjusts to the slope while the upper deck (control deck) distributes the power generated by the skier to perfection in every phase of the turn. Doubledeckers will be available in two different types:D2 Vario Cut with variable sidecut and D2 Vario Flex with variable flex.
Vario Cut seems to be the most extreme system seen so far. When pressure is exerted on the ski, the lower deck, which is split at the tip and tail of the ski, opens up through the flexible rubber connection. This means that the radius varies according to the skiing situation. The greater the pressure applied to the ski, the wider the ski becomes at the front and rear. The radius becomes smaller, making shorter turns possible. When less pressure is applied, the separation of the lower ski is reduced. This results in a larger radius for longer turns. Apart from the agility with various radiuses (from 11.5 to 17.5 m), the D2 Vario Cut also gives you more stable skiing and an extremely smooth ride. This type comes in two models- D2 Vario Cut 72 and D2 Vario Cut 82.
With the D2 Vario Flex Atomic has now, for the first time ever, managed to develop a ski model that features progressively increasing flex. The greater the pressure exerted in the turning phase, the harder the flex. This results in a ski which is very athletic and has excellent tracking and precise turn control even at high speeds. If the skier applies less pressure to the upper deck, the ski has softer flex with easier turn initiation and minimum effort. A major benefit for all skiers: the D2 Vario Flex is maneuverable and dynamic in short turns and stable and forgiving in long turns and when skiing straight ahead. The secret is the automatic adaptation of the flex during the turn. Five connecting pieces made of elastomers between the upper deck and the lower deck ensure active suspension and very smooth skiing. The D2 Vario Flex shows its strengths best in a variety of terrain or on a poorly groomed slope. The ski finds the basic position again quickly – even at high speeds – and thus prevents the very strong oscillations that often occur with conventional ski constructions and can cause mistakes. Thanks to the new technology the D2 Vario Flex combines all the power of a racing machine with the comfort of an all-round ski. Vario Flex also comes in two models - D2 Vario Flex 72 and D2 Vario Flex 82.
Although in this year's Winter ISPO there were no words about this technology, neither are these skis listed in Atomic official catalog for 08/09 season, Doubledecks will be available in stores from October 25th 2008, and official presentation is planned for the Ski World Cup opening in Sölden. The Ski-Mag.com will have these new models tested soon after their official presentation, and than we will certainly have a lot more to say about this cutting edge ski technology.
