Bjelasnica
This Olympics mountain above Sarajevo is a small but promising ski resort that prospers each year.

Bjelasnica is, besides Jahorina, the second Olympics mountain, located close to Sarajevo. At its slopes men's alpine ski races took place at the Olympics of 1984. After the nineties, when these regions were being devastated by war, the new century seems to bring better days for Bjelašnica. Unfortunately, traces of war are still visible – devastated facilities along the resort, as well as the minefields map at its restaurant entrance reminds one of rough days. But, there's no reason to fear; everything at the resort is ready for upcoming winter seasons.

Bjelašnica is reachable from Sarajevo by a well cared for and broad road. But regardless of this, be prepared to use snow chains since it is not the custom here to spread salt on roads. After half an hours' ride from the Sarajevo city center you can park in the guarded parking lot right at the bottom of ski lifts. Parking will cost you BAM 4 (around 2 euros) and as for the ski lift pass, you can buy one right at the parking lot. One-day lift pass costs BAM 23 (around 13 euros). If you own a Swatch Snowpass watch, you can use it here. As for key cards, only seasonal ski passes are issued on them.

At first glance there are not many ski runs at Bjelašnica, especially if you compare it to Jahorina. The total length of ski runs is about 20 km. But, unlike at Jahorina, these trails are well cared for; they are broad and of a considerable length. As for ski lifts, there are two button lifts, two anchor lifts and one three seat chairlift which takes you take you to the mountain top in twelve minutes .

Difficulty of ski trails varies from the ones for beginners (blue marked), which you can reach by button and anchor lifts to the Olympic ones classified as black and red which you will reach by the above mentioned tree seat chairlift that was built after the war. From the top of this chair lift you can reach the mountain top by using a button lift which is declared as the most vicious button lift by the skiers who had used it (due to the steepness of the terrain on which it is built).

Bjelašnica is equipped for night skiing. The devotees of this activity can enjoy it on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The length of the night ski run is 750 m. It is of a moderate steepness and completely and very well lighted.

If you don't possess ski equipment you can rent it here. The price is BAM 16 (about  8 euros) a day for a complete set. If you want to rent skies or snowboard only, you'll pay BAM 10 (about 5 euros) a day. Equipment is not of the latest date though; you will hardly rent carving skis here.

Bjelašnica is not as rich in restaurants as Jahorina, but the two existing ones seem to be enough for the resort of this size. You can look for refreshment in modernly built Benetton where you will also find a ski service. Opposite to Benetton is Mountain House, a wooden facility whose pleasant interior reminds one of the Winter Olimpics of 1984. The prices at Mountain house are somewhat higher, but there you can enjoy autochthonous cuisine; pies, fritters, 'bureks' (pastry dishes filled with meat) etc. The prices are more than affordable; for a portion of roast beef you will need BAM 10 (around 5 euros) and a coffee will cost you BAM 5 (around 2.5 euros).

In the past few years there has been a lot of investment in this resort. There is also exact plan of the resort's development. Unfortunately no artificial snow-making system exists, due to lack of water. But this should also change in future.

More accommodation facilities are presently being built at Bjelašnica, which is a proof that this resort's potential is being taken seriously.

Diligence and amiability of this resort's employees is worth praising. We believe Bjelašnica is going to develop into big and great ski resort, and if you're close by, don't miss skiing the runs that were skied by ski legends!
